Central Islip High School Senior, Zen Ho Sang, has been named a top 300 scholar in the annual Regeneron Science Talent Search, (STS), the nation's most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors. Zen Ho Sang's extraordinary accomplishment is the result of his project entitled "Covariance Study of the Coronavirus Spike Protein". His research uses a particular mathematical analysis for pairing of amino acids a set distance away from each other as to correlate if the mutation occurs upstream, then the mutation downstream can be predicted as to conserve the 3D function of the protein. Using this mathematical model, we hope to predict the efficiency of the COVID-19 vaccine. Mr. Ho Sang's research project has earned him $2,000, and Central Islip High School $2,000 to be applied toward STEM related activities. Pictured Congratulating Zen Ho Sang, (second from left), for his remarkable accomplishment in this elite competition, are from left, Science Research Teacher Mrs. Roann Roderick, Superintendent of Schools Ms. Sharon A. Dungee, and Central Islip High School Principal Mr. Timothy Lynam. Mrs. Roderick noted Zen's project is Central Islip High School's second submission and the school's second semi finalist during the two consecutive years that our District has participated in the Regeneron STS competition. Mr. Lynam lauded the complexity of Mr. Ho Sang's extensive research, and Ms. Dungee congratulated Mr. Ho Sang on behalf of the Central Islip Board of Education, Administration, Faculty, and Staff.
