Student athletes from Central Islip High School partnered up with their younger counterparts from O'Neill Elementary School to engage in reading and literacy activities. The student athletes traveled from Central Islip High School where they visited classrooms to read some developmentally appropriate storybook favorites to O'Neill Elementary students. The high school students, along with Mr. Lawrence S. Philips, Director of Athletics, continued their yearly tradition during this 8th annual event this year at O'Neill in an effort to promote literacy and good scholastic practices. The Student Athletes As Reading Partners promotes academics and allows student athletes to give back to their home community. In the Central Islip School District, interscholastic athletics is an extension of the classroom. After reading the new books, (Mr. Philips extended thanks to Ms. Philips and the I AM CI Foundation), student athletes fielded questions, posed for pictures and signed autographs for students and books for each teacher's class library. During their visit to classrooms, high school students emphasized the importance for the elementary students to do their best in school. They also shared that it is a privilege to be varsity student athletes. Mr. Philips extended thanks to the entire O'Neill staff who helped put the program together and helped reiterate the importance of physical education and physical activity.
